One Picture Manifesto
Helsinki – Rome – Tokyo – Seoul
The Manifesto is a visual commentary on the practices of modern photographic art initiated by artists Maija Tammi and Harri Pälviranta. One Picture Manifesto highlights the significance of a single photograph in a time that tends to celebrate serialism. The manifesto is also intended to encourage people to consider to what extent the form and even the very existence of photographic art is dictated by the parameters of photographic competitions, festivals and grant applications.
In the exhibition each artist presents one independent visual work of art that is not supported by long written descriptions or complementing works from the same artist. The first exhibition at the Finnish Museum of Photography (Autumn 2019) featured one work of art from Marja Pirilä, Harri Pälviranta, Maija Annikki Savolainen and Maija Tammi. At each new location, one local artist creates a new artwork according to the manifesto and thus joins the debate of the “One Picture”.
In Rome, Alessandro Dandini de Sylva joined the exhibition organized by Matéria gallery the spring of 2022. In Tokyo, Hideo Anze took part in the manifesto at Kana Kawanishi gallery in September 2022 and in Seoul, Seungwon Jung made a new work for the exhibition held at The Reference gallery in March 2023.
